Thinking About Buying A Racing Wheel? Read This First!

For some drivers, the wheels on their vehicle aren’t good enough. While they may be suitable for the vehicle and be an original part of it, aftermarket wheels may seem like a necessity. There are thousands of options available, making it tough to find the right one, but not impossible. It’s important to go to a reputable dealer, such as Canterbury Tyre & Mag Supamart, and understand a little about the racing wheel.

Price

It would be nice to get your first set of aftermarket wheels for a cheap price, and many people do it all the time. However, when you sacrifice quality for budget, you could end up hurting yourself, vehicle and others. For example, you need to know things about your vehicle and wheel, such as bolt patterns, offset, proper width, calliper clearances, load tolerances and more. Without such, you may choose the wrong racing wheel or something unsuitable for your car.

Casting Vs. Forging

While wheels can be made from a variety of material, they are made in one of two ways. Casting is where the aluminium alloys or other metals are melted and then poured into a mould. While this is the cheapest and easiest way to make them, it may not be the best option. For one thing, it can lead to quality problems and cracks, but it will also make the car heavier, and there’s nothing worse than racing with a heavy car.

Forged wheels are cut from a slab of aluminium or other metal. However, mould-form-forging is similar where the lump of metal gets sent through a high-pressure press machine multiple times to stretch the particles, making it stronger and lighter at the same time. If you’re going to buy a racing wheel, it’s best to find one that’s forged and not casted.
