Understanding the Differences Between Psychiatrists and Psychologists in Doylestown, PA

Psychologists in Doylestown PA differ from psychiatrists in numerous ways, yet many individuals believe the two professions are one and the same. They do vary in terms of scope and content, however, and individuals need to realize this. Although both do conduct research and psychotherapy, a person must understand the significant differences between the two professions when determining which type of therapist best meets their needs.

Psychologists obtain a doctoral degree in psychology and may pursue either a Psy.D. or a Ph.D. A Psy.D. allows them to practice as a doctor of psychology while a Ph.D. permits them to be called a doctor of philosophy. This degree may either be obtained in counseling or clinical psychology. Either program typically takes between five and seven years to complete, and the majority of states now require that a person undergo an internship of either one or two years before they may become licensed. Other states typically require a person undergo a minimum of one year of supervised practice to obtain full licensure. Only those who have met these requirements may use the title of psychologist.

Psychiatrists, in contrast, attend medical school to receive an M.D. During their time in school, they are taught to assess, diagnose, treat and prevent a variety of mental illnesses. In addition, they are required to spend four years as a resident, learning more about mental health before they can begin practicing. Some psychiatrists opt for addition training in a certain field, such as child and adolescent psychiatry or geriatric psychiatry. Furthermore, in many states, only a psychiatrist may prescribe medication, although this does appear to be changing. Certain states now allow those with master’s degree in clinical psychopharmacology to prescribe medications.
