For many people, the breasts represent femininity and beauty. For the transwoman, it is one of the most important procedures as it provides them a greater sense of congruence between her inner and outer self. This translates into improved self-esteem and confidence and helps her to “blend into society.”
Transgender breast augmentation is a very safe and common procedure. Implants can be placed above or below the muscle. Additionally, they can be inserted in various places such as the armpit, areola or below the breast. There are several types of implants, including saline and silicone options. There are various “shapes” such as smooth/round and teardrop or anatomically correct. Your surgeon will explain and discuss these options with you to help determine the best solution for you.
Because many transgender women have broader shoulders and bigger rib cages, it’s very important to select the right type of implant. This is a decision that your surgeon will help you make.
The recovery time for breast augmentation is fairly quickly. Most patients can return to work in 1-2 weeks. The first few days are important as rest is recommended and any driving, lifting or reaching should be minimized. The breasts are typically swollen after surgery and can feel tender but the pain is moderate and controlled through medication. You will also be instructed on how to massage the breasts which facilitate healing and “drop” into a more natural position.
It’s important for transwomen to be on hormone replacement therapy (HRT) with estrogen for at least 1 year prior to surgery. This will allow sufficient time for the body to develop natural breasts and areola size which results in better cosmetic results.
During your consultation, the surgeon will discuss all of these details and options with you and answer any questions. You will also have the opportunity to feel and test out the various types and sizes of breast implants. The surgeon will help you decide what is the best option for you.
