Low or High Pressure?
You have two basic choices when it comes to pressure for your patio misting system. Some systems are designed to run on low water pressure, while others require a high pressure operation. There are pros and cons of each method.
Low Pressure Systems
Because the pressure is very low, there is no need for additional equipment like pumps or fans. In addition, a low pressure patio misting system is very inexpensive and many of these systems are simple to install. You only need to connect your mist system to a garden hose, and it can cool the outdoor area as much as ten to fifteen degrees.
There are some downsides to low pressure patio misting systems. For example, a low pressure system cannot create a fog or mist with extremely tiny droplets. As a result, not all the water mist will evaporate and provide a cooling effect. In fact, you can feel the excess water in the air when you are out of doors when the system is running. These systems can also increase the humidity in the air considerably.
High Pressure Systems
If you want something with the greatest cooling capacity, you should consider a high pressure patio misting system. A high pressure system utilizes a special pump which increases the water pressure to as much as 1000 psi. In addition, the nozzles have very tiny holes (small as 5 microns) and this creates a fog which is easy to evaporate.
The cooling effects of a high pressure system can be dramatic. In fact, in some cases, temperatures can drop as much as 30 to 40 degrees (depending on air conditions). This is the reason many homeowners choose a patio misting system with high pressure.
Because high pressure systems use an extremely fine spray of water, humidity is not raised much at all. In fact, most of the water is evaporated and you do not feel any wetness from the system.
A quality high pressure misting system will cost more than a cheap low pressure patio misting system. However, you get what you pay for and if you want something to give you the best results, the additional expense is well worth it. Keeping your nozzles clean in your high pressure system is not difficult, especially since many have easy to clean nozzles and high pressure is less prone to clogging than low pressure nozzles.
