Terrazzo flooring is beautiful and has been making a comeback due to its luxurious look and marble-like finish. It is made from a base of cement or resin, with marble chips, glass, and other materials mixed in to add depth and character. While this type of flooring is low-maintenance and hard to stain, it isn’t impossible. As such, we wanted to offer some tips for cleaning terrazzo floors and removing any stains you might find.
- Dropping Drinks
If you find that someone has spilled an alcoholic drink on the floor, it’s easy to clean up with some hot, soapy water. This will usually remove the stain. If the stain seems to linger, try dabbing it with denatured alcohol. If the stain is still there, wet a cloth with hydrogen peroxide and place it on the stain with a cloth soaked in ammonia on top.
- Cleaning Up Blood
In many cases, you can clean up blood stains with a dash of cold, clean water. If this isn’t enough on its own, try adding a few drops of ammonia to the water. Stubborn stains may require lukewarm water and powdered malt to come up. You’ll want to let that mixture sit for an hour before rinsing.
- Greasy and Oil Stains
Oil stains can be tricky on any type of flooring, but with terrazzo you’ll want to clean it up with some warm water mixed with liquid detergent. If you have access to degreaser, add a dab of that as a spot treatment. This particular cleaning trick also works well with paint.
- Ink Stains
Ink stains can also be cleaned up with detergent and warm water. If the stain is old, you can combine water and sodium perborate. You should form that into a paste and then apply it liberally to the stain. If the ink stain is blue, try using a water and ammonia mixture on a layer of cloth which you place on the floor.
- Pet Urine Stains
Anyone with a pet knows that cleaning terrazzo floors is going to happen at some time. You should use hot water and abrasive powder on this stain. If it doesn’t’ come up, try using a cloth soaked in hydrogen peroxide on the stain, followed by a cloth with ammonia.
