While transgender GCS surgery (genital confirmation surgery) is not a requirement for transition, many transwomen do opt to have this procedure. At the Trans Center, our GCS patients are typically very happy with their results, reporting improvements in both sexual functioning and body satisfaction.
GCS refers to several procedures that are generally performed together. First, the testes and penis are removed and used to create a vagina, labia, and clitoris. The urethra is then shortened and repositioned. The end result includes fully-functioning external female genitalia that allow for urination, sexual intercourse, and orgasm.
The surgeons at the Trans Center follow the WPATH guidelines when performing transgender GCS surgery. These guidelines require patients who are considering GCS to obtain two letters of recommendation from healthcare professionals, and to undergo hormone therapy and live full-time as a woman for at least one year. Following these guidelines helps us to ensure that you’ll feel completely satisfied with your decision to have GCS.
GCS is performed under general anesthesia, and most patients take about 4-6 weeks to recover from the surgery. Vaginal packing and a urinary catheter will be placed post-procedure, and you’ll receive a prescription for pain medications to manage any soreness or discomfort. Vaginal dilators should also be used in the weeks following surgery, which will ensure that you achieve optimal results from your GCS. Sexual activity can typically be resumed about 8 weeks after your procedure.
As with any major procedure, transgender GCS surgery does carry some risk. Possible side effects include pain, bleeding, scarring, infection, fistula, narrowing of the vagina, and death of the tissue used to perform the procedure. Closely following your surgeon’s instructions for after-care can help to minimize these risks.
