Maybe you’ve already weighed the pros and cons of getting dental implants, and you’ve made up your mind to get them. However, you still want to know more about the dental implant procedure timeline. How long can you expect the entire process to take? There are a few different factors that affect the timeline.
Establishing Candidacy
Before you can get implants, you’ll schedule a consultation during which a doctor will decide whether or not you’re a candidate. You have to have enough bone structure in your jaws to accept an implant. If you don’t have enough, then a bone graft may be an option.
The Healing Process
Once it’s clear that you’re a candidate, then you’ll have the implant surgery. On the day you receive your implants, you’ll be fitted with a temporary crown. The crown is the part that looks like a tooth. The actual implant is a metal stud upon which an abutment and crown is placed. It’ll take approximately four to six months for your gums to heal up and accept the permanent implant. Once fully healed, the temporary crown will be replaced with your permanent, custom fitted crown that will be permanently attached to the implant.
