What Is LASIK?

LASIK is a surgical procedure that is used on people that are nearsighted, farsighted or have astigmatism. These vision anomalies are almost always caused by focusing errors; this can be corrected by changing the shape of the cornea.

The cornea is that part of the eye that helps in focusing light which is really what creates the image on the retina, in fact it is very similar to the lens on a camera and the way it focus to create an image on film.

How LASIk works:

A skilled ophthalmologist creates a flap of tissue in the cornea, using a laser; the ophthalmologist removes microscopically sized cells in the next layer of the eye. The procedure only takes a matter of minutes, once the surgery is completed, the flap is repositioned. The flap protects the eye while it heals. It does not take long for the patient to see a marked improvement in his or her vision.

Refractive error:

The front surface of the human eye is the cornea, coupled with the lens inside the eye completes the focusing system. In a perfect eye, the cornea and the lens are matched perfectly, if there is any mismatch this is called “refractive error.” It is this that causes blurred vision at some point.

There are three very different types of refractive error; myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. Myopia is nearsightedness; hyperopia is near sightedness and astigmatism causes objects at any distance to be out of focus and blurry.
