How to Detect and Fix a Water Heater Leak in Atlanta Georgia

by | Jul 21, 2015 | Home Improvement

If your water heater is leaking, then you should have it repaired by water heater services in Atlanta Georgia. In the meantime, though, you can determine the source of the leak and make temporary repairs on your own.

A leak can be caused by several factors, such as a loose valve or a corroded water tank. A puddle forming under the tank, though, could be caused by condensation and should not automatically be taken as a sign that the system is leaking water. If there is indeed a leak, however, then it is likely caused by too much water pressure coming from a pipe. This is especially the case if the water is spraying from the pipes as opposed to just leaking in small droplets.

The first thing you want to do is turn off the inlet valve, which is usually located on a pipeline adjacent to the heater and in the form of a red circular handle. The next step is to completely drain the water out of the tank. This can be done by attaching a typical garden hose to the unit’s drain valve. Be careful to perform this step with extreme caution as the water may be scalding hot. If you are unable to drain the tank with every safety precaution in place, then contact water heater services in Atlanta Georgia.

Once the water is completely drained, the leaky pipe can be temporarily fixed using either pipe bandage or plumber’s epoxy. This provides a short-term seal that should mitigate the leak if not bring it to a halt altogether. Keep in mind, however, that once a pipe is leaking, that piece of pipe needs to be replaced. Using bandage or putty should never be a long-term solution.

A leak may also come from the temperature-pressure relief valve. Keep in mind that the valve is naturally designed to release water when it senses excess pressure. If this is the case, you need to adjust the tank’s temperature. In some cases, the relief valve itself may be faulty or cracked and needs to be replaced.

For safety purposes, most leaks should be diagnosed and fixed by water heater services in Atlanta Georgia. If you consider yourself a savvy DIYer, however, then you may be able to locate the source of the problem and provide a temporary fix while awaiting assistance from a certified technician.
