Pediatrician Checkups for Children Under Six Months of Age

by | Oct 1, 2018 | Health

All babies should visit a pediatric clinic in Summerville, SC, quite often, even if they are incredibly healthy. This is because the first two years of a child’s life are crucial to the child’s development and growth. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, your child should have checkups at birth, a few days after birth, and at one, two, four, six, nine, 12, 15, 18, and 24 months. We’ll explain what to expect in this article.

Each Appointment

You can expect your pediatrician will examine your child for things like alertness, hip stability, reflexes, and skin tone. The physician will also take measurements of the child’s height, weight, and head circumference. They will also observe the child and ask about their milestones to ensure the child is developing correctly. A behavioral assessment is also carried out by watching the child and asking you questions. Finally, you can expect a thorough physical exam.

At Birth

Your doctor will test your baby’s hearing using two different techniques. Your child will also have blood is drawn, which screens for inherited disorders including hypothyroidism and sickle-cell disease. Your child will also receive their first immunization, which is for hepatitis B.

Soon After Birth

The pediatric clinic in Summerville, SC, will measure your child to be sure they are growing correctly. This appointment will also include another physical exam and observation of behavior and development. If blood testing were not done at birth, it would be at this time.

One Month

At this exam, the typical things will be done. You may also have tuberculosis testing done. You can also expect the child to receive their next dose of hepatitis B vaccine at this checkup or the next.

Two Months

If your child did not receive the second hepatitis B vaccine, that would be done at this time. At some point between now and six months of age, the child will also be given the rotavirus vaccine in two to three doses. Other vaccines typically given at this time include DTaP, PCV, HiB, and IPV.

Four Months

In addition to the regular checkup, you may expect your child to have a hemoglobin screening. Some of the vaccinations from above will also be given as their second dose.
