Choosing the best interior paint

by | Sep 10, 2014 | Home & Garden

There are two basic paints available; latex and oil based and for those who are considering apartment painting in New York City choosing one or the other is the first consideration. Once that choice has been made the next choice is to decide the finish of which there are flat, eggshell, satin, semi-gloss and high gloss. Each one of these available finishes have their place in the home as they are used in different locations or for a different purpose, it is therefore important to look into the pros and cons of the finishes in advance of the job.

In years past oil based paints were popular but rarely do you see it used for interior purposes anymore. Oil based paints have an extremely strong odor, takes perhaps as long as 24 hours to completely dry and if it spills or drips, clean-up is quite difficult. These are a few of the reasons that professional painters shy away from this type of paint; plus, it doesn’t stand the test of time. Latex paint which is water based rather than oil is not plagued with these problems. Latex paint is easy to apply, easy to clean up should there be a spill or drips, dries very quickly and lasts for years. Oil based paints are still good for outside, especially on metal surfaces but for apartment painting in New York City nothing beats latex.

Latex paint is available in a number of different finishes which include matter, eggshell, sating as well as semi and high gloss. Matte finish, often called flat, does not have any sheen at all; it is a good choice for walls which have imperfections and is almost always the choice for ceilings. Eggshell and satin finishes are the most popular as they can be used on almost any wall. These two finishes have a slight sheen to them, satin is somewhat shinier than eggshell but both are great choices.

Semi-gloss and high-gloss paints are very shiny and of all the finishes, these are the easiest to keep clean. These finishes are not usually used on walls; they are reserved for woodwork and trim as well as wooden furniture. If this paint is used on walls at all it may be semi-gloss used on the walls of the kitchen where there is a need for frequent washing.

When undertaking New York renovations the color is quite critical; many landlords and building owners want the walls to remain neutral. Latex paint can be custom mixed in literally any color imaginable.
