Can MIG Welding Help Your Fabrication Business?

by | Jan 12, 2017 | Metal Fabrication

If you are interested in MIG welding in Cleveland, you have a few things to learn. However, it’s not that difficult and there are many important advantages to this procedure. Let’s talk about MIG, what it means and the many benefits it provides today’s fabrication industry.

What Does MIG Mean?

MIG refers to metal inert gas welding. MIG welding in Cleveland differs from stick welding because the welder does not hold an electrode to the area to be welded. Instead, the electrode takes the form of a steel wire which is continually fed through the welding assembly and extrudes through the weld gun tip. The weld puddle is formed by the melted wire.

It would not be hard for things from the environment to enter the weld puddle and contaminate it. This could ruin the weld. To prevent this problem, an inert gas like argon is fed through the tip and acts as a shield against contaminants. Inert gases do not connect with other elements in the air and this is why they act as a shield.

In some cases, CO2 can be used for a shielding gas. Even though it is not an inert gas, CO2 methods are still commonly referred to as MIG or metal inert gas welding.

Benefits

When your Cleveland business utilizes MIG welding, you’ll enjoy many benefits, including:

  • Easy to learn – the process is relatively simple and can be done with one hand. In fact, in just a few hours you could be welding.
  • Productivity – much faster than standard stick weld techniques
  • Clean – when you weld with metal inert gas there is no slag formed (as with stick welding). There is also minimal splatter, so cleaning up is easy.
  • Versatile – you can use MIG on stainless steel, aluminum, copper, magnesium and many metal alloys.
